Discover German Heritage

Fredericksburg's story begins in 1846, when German settlers founded the town and left their mark on its architecture, food and traditions. Step into that history at the 3.5 acre museum complex that is the Pioneer Museum, where preserved German structures and artefacts bring Gillespie County's early days to life. Several times a year, costumed historians stage living history demonstrations of blacksmithing, spinning and storytelling.

From bratwurst to brews, Fredericksburg's German heritage is evident in the nearly dozen restaurants that serve German-inspired cuisine. Both of the town's breweries, Altstadt Brewery and Fredericksburg Brewing Company, boast German-style brews, while one of the town's top exports is Opa's Smoked Meats. The area's German culinary creations are a major reason that Fredericksburg has previously been named one of the United States' 'Best Small Town Food Scenes'.
